PR and Journalism

I never really saw myself as a true blogger and I still do not see myself as a true blogger.  For Intro to PR with Professor Andrews, the class was assigned to write a blog every other week on one of two topics she assigns us.  One of the stipulations to the blogs is that the blogs had to be at least 200 words in length.  Now, I have never like writing of any sort nor have I liked to take the time to research a subject that really does not catch my interest.  For this blog post, I am not really interested in, but I can blabber my opinion on a topic I’m not very fond of.  Hugh Macleod may have said it best, “Blogging is an art, same as any other method of self-expression. Some are better at it than others.”  And I, myself, do not like art at all.  So for anyone anticipating me to continue blogging after I complete the Intro to Public Relations course this semester, please don’t be disheartened when I say this.  Rob will not be posting anymore blogs unless he is mandated to, but I still wish the best to all of the fellow bloggers out there reading my blogs.

Below I have attached Professor Andrew’s blog page which contains the topics I was assigned to blog about and page I found quotes about blogging on (which includes the quote from Hugh Macleod)

I can say that honestly I believe it is very beneficial for a no-public relations major to take a public relations course depending on the major that he or she is completing.  For me, I am a Multimedia Communications with an Emphasis on Information major and taking Intro to Public Relations has helped me to understand the ends and outs of publicly getting things done in the media.  What I am not telling you is that my minor is Public Relations, but I am planning to go into radio broadcasting or sports announcing when I graduate from Georgia Southern with my Bachelors degree.  ”The Think Spot – Public Relations” talks about how public relations is similar to such majors as marketing, advertising, and journalism, but the book also talks about how public relations differs from those fields.  The book speaks about how public relations gives a person a more overall view of the courses together as well as shows that they go hand in hand with each other.  If a person wants to market a product publicly, the person will know how to do it in an appropriate and sufficient manner if they take a public relations course while in pursuit of their major degree.  Below I have included the links to Ch 1 and Ch 2 of “The Think Spot – Public Relations” that speak about how public relations can benefit an individual.

In today’s world, electronic messaging via the internet is the most sufficient way to go.  When I was in middle school, there was a big social site that everyone my age was a part of except me.  Myspace was the crave then, but as I got to high school the kids my age had more of a taste for Facebook.  Today, Facebook is still the way to go along with Twitter for your social internet cravings.  I love Facebook.  Facebook helps me keep up with what is going on in the world.  Yesterday I found out that a Spanish teacher I had in middle school and high school died yesterday.  The only reason why I found this out is because I happened to be on Facebook when a few of my friends posted statuses about the sad news.  Another reason I love Facebook is because I can let people know what events are going on.  It makes my job a lot easier as a Community Leader here at Georgia Southern when I can create a group with my students in it.  I just post what I need to the group page and my students easily see it with no hassles.  I don’t have to take but a couple minutes out of my life and I have gotten the information to 80 students.  I have posted the link to my Facebook page for my students I am a CL over.   I have also posted an article by the Social Media Examiner.  The examiner says that small businesses can get just as much clout by being available, flexible, and by taking action.  Facebook is a fine way for small businesses to take action and make themselves known as well as being available and flexible to groups that that small business may not be able reach otherwise.

The Huffington Post reported in the last 24 hours that many stores are banning the selling of a certain dairy product.  Ben & Jerry’s is known for coming up with its new ice cream flavors that are parts of pop culture fads.  The most recent  flavor was Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream until they made an ice cream homage to a Saturday Night Live skit that starred Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, and Alec Baldwin.  The ice cream flavor – Schweddy Balls.  In the skit, Baldwin plays Mr. Schweddy who is sharing his chocolate covered rum balls with two radio hosts.  ”No one can resist my Schweddy Balls.”  The One Million Moms group is trying to get the ice cream giant to pull Schweddy Balls off the shelves and not let people put Schweddy Balls in there mouths.   Other parents are saying that they don’t care because the marketing of Schweddy Balls is not aimed for children and that its quite hilarious.  Sean Greenwood, the spokesperson for Ben & Jerry’s issued this statement, “Yes, some supermarket chains decided not to carry Schweddy Balls. That is true, possibly because they found the name too irreverent. We respect their decision.”  This is a good tactic.  They are neither dropping the product nor are they pushing the issue with the markets or parents that don’t want the product just because the name sounds vulgar.  Ben & Jerry’s Scweddy Balls is a limited edition ice cream, and is now the most served limited edition ice cream that they have sold ever.  They should continue creating new flavors and having fun with the pop culture names.

For me, I love broadcasting, especially when I am working in front of the camera and not behind the camera.  But before I can do anything with my soon to be Bachelors degree in Multimedia Communications with an Emphasis on Information, I will have to get to know the Public Relations field.  This leads me to my Public Relations analogy.  ’Public Relations is to broadcasting as baseball is to a mitt.’  To me, broadcasting needs Public Relations just as a mitt needs a baseball, but you don’t need a mitt to play baseball just as you don’t need broadcasting to have Public Relations.  I love broadcasting more so the correspondent side of field.  I love the feel of the attention on me and being able to meet new people.  I really fell in love the correspondent job when I went home to help prep my little brother for his recorded interview with a Today Show correspondent.  They get to go to new places and meet new people.  I included the link to my bother’s verbal interview of the video clip of the interview that was on seen on the Today Show on Thursday, October 6, 2011.  I also attached a picture from the clip.  The picture is of my little brother showing what he does on a shrimp boat.  I am in the back ground.

To many minds, journalism and public relations go hand in hand with each other. To some it’s so closely related that it’s the same mind set. For the most part, journalism is an art of going out and researching as well as recording something such as an event. Public Relations is an art of getting said research and recordings out in the open for all to see and witness. But both can be combined in such case as an article in a newspaper advertising an event to come by talking about the event as well as the event in the past. Sadly, journalism is becoming less and less. An article from thegoodthebadthespin.com talks about the demise of journalism due to the fact that older as well as some current journalists do not want to change their journalistic skills to accommodate the increase incline of media technology. More people are gung hoe now on getting known than through Public Relations, thus causing the demise of journalism. In another article by thegoodthebadthespin.com, a discussion on journalism schools getting rid of public relations courses. Some think that Public Relations is a better suit for business schools. I’m not sure yet I agree with that. I guess I am one who sees journalism with Public Relations and Public Relations with journalism hand and hand together forever.

I said I would never make a blog, but as my momma says, ‘Never say never’.  I am somewhat familiar with the public relations field.  One of my cousins was top PR adviser for the Homeland Security branch inside the White House.  But even my parts of my family has negativity toward public relations majors.  For instance, my dad thinks its an easy field of work, but as I gradually show him what I am dealing with day in and day out, he is starting to think otherwise.

Some people are like my dad, believing the so-called public relations myths.  Many people are set in their minds that ‘All media is good media.’  That is very much false.   Some media can negatively affect your business meaning less profit which is not good.  Another myth is that some people think if they get on a show like ‘Oprah’ or get something published in a magazine like ‘People’ that they will have it made.  Public Relations is not like the lottery, you have to put in a lot of time to get very well renowned.  Then there is the ‘My story is so easy to pitch, you should be paying me.’  I hate to break it to anyone but its not going to just fall in your lap so if you don’t like that then find a new profession.

These myths exist because people don’t really know the ins and outs, ups and downs of public relations.  They see public relations practitioners on television and movies and believe ‘It’s so easy even a caveman can do it.’  People think PR is easy, but its not always easy.  ‘It is what it is’, and sometimes it is not easy at all.
